Choosing the Right Student Credit Cards
Student credit cards differ from standard issue consumer credit cards in several ways. First and foremost credit cards for college students almost always come with higher interest rates. The reason for this is because the banks and credit card issuers know that students, and young adults in general, are a greater credit risk than more mature individuals.
The advantage that students have when applying for a credit card is the fact that they know that the student's prospects for future employment upon graduation are very good. Simply put, they will be able to pay their bills. Because of this and the fact that credit card companies want to establish long-term financial relationships with young adults, your chances of getting your student credit card application approved are very good.
All the major banks and credit card issuers including Citibank, Capital One, Chase and Discover card offer student credit cards. Be sure that you carefully read the application of the offer that interests you before you complete and submit the application. Some important points to look for include, but are not limited to:
- What is the Interest Rate
- Are There Any Fees
- What Restrictions Are There
The purpose of having a student credit card is to begin building that all important credit rating that will serve you throughout your life. Only use your card for essentials and emergencies (buying beer doesn't qualify under either category).Try to avoid making purchases that you cannot afford to pay in full when the bill arrives. You do not want to carry debt and begin to start that vicous cycle of paying monthly interest on your balance. Nothing burns through your money quicker than credit card interest payments.
